Green, milky and a little strange in the best way. Amber Noir opens on elemi, which is resinous and faintly citrus-piney, with fig sitting right beside it - the leaf and the fruit both, sappy and sweet at once - and carrot seed underneath adding an earthy, almost buttery root quality that most people cannot name but immediately notice. The heart is lily of the valley, cool and green rather than floral-sweet. Then it settles into cedarwood, sandalwood and musk, dry and creamy together, and stays there. It is quieter and more mineral than the name suggests, and it is closer to a soft woody scent than to a heavy amber.

Top: Elemi, fig, carrot · Heart: Lily of the valley · Base: Cedarwood, sandalwood, musk

Eight hours or so, with modest projection - an arm's length bubble rather than a room. Miami is genuinely kind to this profile. Fig and carrot seed are both lactonic, creamy materials, and creamy notes get plusher rather than heavier in humid air, so the fragrance rounds out over an afternoon instead of collapsing. Sandalwood in particular reads smoother here than it does in cold dry weather, where it can go papery. The one caution: because it sits so close, people tend to keep spraying until they can smell it on themselves, and four sprays of a creamy woody scent on a ninety-degree day is more than the room asked for. Three is the ceiling.

Year round in this climate, and unusually versatile - office, daytime, dinner, a Sunday. Unisex in practice as well as on the box. It is a good pick if you want to smell interesting without smelling like a statement.

Woody skin scents are the hardest category to judge from a description, so start with a 5ml or 10ml decant and give it a few days. Or come test it in Miami Gardens and wear it out of the shop, because the carrot and fig do something different on everyone.
